Why use LED lighting?

In the US 22% of all electricity used is for lighting. The US spent over $300 billion in electricity in 2006. LEDs use, on average, 5% of the electricity of an incandecent light bulb and do not have any of the mercury that compact florecent lightbulbs (CFLs) use. What this means is that if America replaced all of its lighting with LEDs we would stand to reduce our energy consumption of electricity for lighting by 90% or more. Now that is green!
